I'm Elliot Philie, and I am a fine artist.
Art, for me, is a way I can release all my pent-up emotions. It has become a coping mechanism for my mental illnesses and dealing with being queer in a world where it is not fully accepted. Even when I was younger, if I was having a particularly hard day, art was my friend. It guided me to put my feelings on paper like a parent would comfort a child. I want others to see art in the way I do, for them to know they aren’t alone in their hardships.
I’ve been working on a collection of paintings that are mental illnesses personified. I plan to paint figures corresponding to dermatillomania, social anxiety, and ADHD. Those three are something I deal with, and I hope by sharing them with others, they can feel less alone.
